2010 Vets Tournament

Veterans Tournament 2010

The final was a repeat of last year’s clash of the Titans – Paul Olney v Rob Hildick. Would Rob repeats his heroics of last year or would Paul regain the title he won in 2008? We were honoured to have our very own County Champion (Herts volunteer of the year) Mr. Ian Dorrett as umpire.

The match was played on a warm but humid afternoon – a fact that would make fitness a telling factor during the match. The turnout was smaller than previous years (note to self – needs to be before school holidays start next year!).
However the crowd were noisy and boisterous throughout, providing very British support to both players.

Match report

Paul roared into the lead in the first set and, despite a revival by Rob late in the set, won it 6-3.
The second set was tighter, with Rob up a break at 4-3. However, Paul broke straight back and had chances to close out with two match points at 5-4. However, Rob dug deep and eventually the set went to a tie break. Paul then built up an unassailable lead and closed it
out for a fine win 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).

Analysis

It was midway through the second set before Paul made his first unforced error. His accuracy and pace around the court were ultimately too much for the (slightly) older man. I think we can safely predict a change of coach for Mr. Hildick before next year – or perhaps he just needs a change of head gear? – see above

BBQ and prize giving

The final was followed by an excellent BBQ – thanks due to Andy Rogers and Maria Coote for culinary excellence.

Also thanks are due to Lisa Clark for pergola construction and Ian Dorrett et al for helping carry and return the chairs to the pavilion.

And not forgetting Paul Olney himself for organising the tournament this year and all those who took part.
